Overview

Copper concentrate is a key intermediate product in the copper production process. It is derived from the extraction of copper from raw ore, a vital step in producing refined copper, which is widely valued for its high electrical and thermal conductivity, malleability, corrosion resistance, and ability to form alloys.

While copper can naturally occur in its pure form, most of the copper used in global industries comes from ores such as chalcopyrite, bornite, and malachite. These ores are mined and processed into copper concentrate, a material containing significantly higher levels of copper than raw ore. To reach a level of purity, sulphide ores undergo a process called froth flotation, which separates copper-rich minerals from the rest of the rock. This method is highly efficient, often achieving copper recovery rates of 85–90%.

They are the main feedstock for smelters worldwide and are supplied at high-grade (30–40% Cu). Concentrates allow for more efficient transport of copper units and play a central role in the global copper supply chain.
